Aides Are Terrified Queen’s Mobility Issues May Decrease the Impact of Her Platinum Jubilee
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, set to mark the Queen’s milestone 70 years on the throne — the longest of any British Monarch — is planned to be a once-in-a-lifetime affair. But the Queen’s worsening mobility could mean that some of the planned events are scaled back, and the monarch will likely be absent in some.
However, Her Majesty has continued to carry out virtual engagements, and it is possible that fans may catch a glimpse of the elderly royal in the course of the Jubilee celebrations.
Royal Expert Says the Queen’s Absence From Events Could Impact Crowd Numbers
It’s been revealed that aides are worried that the Queen’s limited mobility would mean that her appearances at public events will be few and far between. This could impact the number of people who turn up for events, a royal expert predicted.
“I imagine that the aides are worried that if the public don’t see her, people may think that if she’s not there it’s not worth us going,” Angela Levin told Sky News.
Prince Charles and Camilla have stepped up to carry some of the Queen’s workload to ensure her comfort.
The Jubilee celebrations will officially kick off in June, over a four-day bank holiday weekend and will feature culture and arts from different places in the world and from different time periods. The Royal Family gallery, featuring rare pictures of its members through the years, will also be open to the public in honor of the celebrations.
Royal Expert Says Harry Won’t Be Bothered to Attend the Queen’s Celebrations
Royal biographer Angela Levin also said that she believes Harry won’t be traveling from the U.S. to attend the celebrations honoring his grandmother’s long reign, amidst his battle with Home Office over private police security.
Ms. Levin added: “It’s quite painful to watch him. She [Her Majesty] would love to see him. She adores Harry. It doesn’t seem to bother him.”
Since the Sussex couple permanently stepped down as working royals, they are no longer eligible for royal protection.
According to Harry’s spokesperson, he and Meghan Markle visited the Queen and Prince Charles in secret before heading to Netherlands for the Invictus Games. No details about their meeting have been made public.
