Royal Family News: From Consort to Queen
Royal Family news reveals that, according to The Independent, the Queen Consort will be receiving a new title after her husband King Charles III’s coronation, and it appears to fly in the face of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s wishes. AS News reports that Buckingham Palace is planning on officially describing Camilla as Queen instead of Queen Consort.
The New York Post reports that the change will only take place after King Charles’ Coronation. The coronation is set to take place on May 6 at Westminster Abbey at which time the King will be crowned alongside Camilla.
Sources Claim Queen is ‘Simpler’ than Queen Consort
Queen Elizabeth II announced, before her death in September 2022, that it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla be known as Queen Consort “as she continues her own loyal service.” However, a report quoting Buckingham Palace insiders has suggested that Camilla may shed the “cumbersome”
title of Queen Consort for the “simpler” title of Queen.
A reportedly “well-placed” source for the Daily Mail said, “There’s a view in the palace that Queen Consort is cumbersome, and it might be simpler for Camilla to be known just as the Queen when the time is right.”
It Was Similar with Prince Phillip
The Palace source added that “The Reading Room was a sign of that. Her Majesty is the Queen after all,” referencing the renaming of the Queen Consort’s charity. The charity was previously dubbed Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room but was launched last week as the Queen’s Reading Room with “Consort” dropped.
The source added, “Prince Philip was Prince Consort officially, but he wasn’t known as Prince Consort. The Queen would of course still be Queen Consort so the Palace, of course, wouldn’t stop anyone calling Her Majesty that if they so chose.”
From Princess Consort to Queen Consort
The name shift from Princess Consort to Queen Consort came after Queen Elizabeth II issued a statement on her Jubilee Anniversary last June. In the statement, she said: “I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support. I remain eternally grateful for and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me.
“And when, in fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.” Return here often for more Royal Family news and updates
