Kate Middleton Delivers Power Keynote Speech About Addiction
The royal family news and updates tease that Kate Middleton delivered a powerful speech on Tuesday, during the launch of The Forward Trust’s “Taking Action on Addiction” campaign.
The organization launched its long-term campaign on addiction just in time for Addiction Awareness Week, which runs from October 18-24. It seeks to improve the public’s awareness and understanding of addiction as well as its causes and scale. Through this, the non-profit organization hopes to encourage more people to ask and get help.
“Addiction is not a Choice”
During the launch, Kate Middleton talked about many things. She thanked the people who opened up to her about their personal experience of addiction. The Duchess said that “addiction is not a choice” and “no one chooses to become an addict.”
She added that addiction can happen to anyone and nobody is immune. However, addiction is rarely discussed as a serious mental health problem. She noted that people don’t take that much time to uncover and understand the root causes of addiction.
Compassion and Empathy is Key
“The journey towards addiction is often multi-layered and complex. But, by recognizing what lies beneath addiction, we can help remove the taboo and shame that sadly surrounds it,” the royal said. She urged society to be compassionate and empathize with people, understand their journey, and take time to know their past.
The duchess wore a Christopher Kane-designed red pleated skirt, Ralph Lauren tan pumps, and a DeMellier bag during the event. She noted that addiction has gotten worse because of the lockdowns and anxiety due to the pandemic. The number of families and kids who are suffering from this mental health condition has significantly increased ever since COVID-19 happened. “About 2 million people who are in recovery have relapsed in the past 18 months,” a figure which is very alarming.
Kate Fully Supports the Campaign
The Forward Trust merged with Action on Addiction in May. One month after, the organization announced Kate Middleton as its patron. The duchess hopes the organization will help more people turn their lives around. She extends her full support to “The Taking Action on Addiction” campaign, which aims not only to help people recover from addiction, but also live a prosperous life after. She encouraged everyone to play a part so “we can build a happier, healthier, and more nurturing society.”
