What We Know About Samantha Markle’s Lawsuit Against the Duchess of Sussex
On Friday, Meghan Markle filed a motion to dismiss the defamation lawsuit filed by her half-sister Samantha Markle, labelling it as meritless and based on allegations that are “demonstrably false.”
The multi-millionaire Duchess also asked the court to order Samantha to cover her legal fees.
In the defamation lawsuit filed on March 3, Samantha Markle, 57, accused Meghan of publishing and disseminating “false and malicious lies designed to destroy [her] reputation” and exposed her to “humiliation, shame and hatred on a worldwide scale” in order to create a false narrative of her childhood.
Markle is suing the Duchess for damages in excess of $75,000 for harm to her reputation, which led to lost income by directly affecting the sale of her autobiography “The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister”.
“We feel confident that we’ll survive a motion to dismiss based on the allegations and the specific falsities that were made by [the duchess],” Markle’s attorney Jamie Sasson told BuzzFeed News Friday.
Which Defamatory Comments Are Samantha Markle Suing For?
Samantha Markle is suing Meghan for making 17 allegedly defamatory statements: seven were made in Meghan Markle’s email to Jason Knauf, seven were made in “Finding Freedom”, and another three were made during Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview.
While Meghan Markle formerly denied having anything to do with the biography penned by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Duran, she was forced to apologise to the court when it was revealed that she instructed topics for the royal autobiography.
On the other hand, Meghan’s lawyers are filing to dismiss Samantha’s lawsuit. They maintained that the claims were merely allegations, and even if they were not, Samantha still has no case against Meghan.
Samantha’s original lawyer Douglas Kahle filed to withdraw from the case as counsel, citing “irreconcilable differences and fundamental disagreements regarding various aspects of this case and the strategy moving forward.”
