Mel B Receives an MBE From Prince William After Surviving Horrendous Marriage
Mel B was giddy when she accepted her MBE honor in front of her mom, even curtseying to Prince William. The former Spice Girls singer was honored for her groundbreaking work supporting domestic violence victims.
Mel B Receives Major Investiture at Buckingham Palace
Mel B was joined by her mother Andrea to receive the honor at Buckingham Palace in the first major investiture handed out at the Queen’s residence since the pandemic hit.
The singer and T.V. personality was cheery throughout the ceremony, which recognized her work highlighting domestic violence. She was made an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honors list for services rendered to charitable causes and vulnerable women.
Mel graced the event in a red dress designed by former Spice Girls bandmate Victoria Beckham and grinned as she received her gong.
The Women’s Aid Patron dedicated the honor to the women killed by their partners.
This is coming after she bravely opened up about her own terrible journey surviving an abusive partner.
“I went through a horrendous abusive marriage which nearly killed me,” she told The Sun last year. “I got out of it and ever since I’ve tried to help other women — and men — who have been through or are going through abuse in whatever shape or form.”
Speaking about receiving the MBE honors, Mel B shared: “And there was this letter saying the Prime Minister had spoken to the Queen about giving me an MBE.
“I thought about all the women I’ve met over the past few years who have been through terrible situations, women who have died, women who are still suffering. This, for me, was all about them. It still is.”
Speaking about her chat with Prince William, the star said: “He commended me on all my work that I’ve been doing, and he goes, ‘I’m so sorry you went through such a horrible time’.
“He did say, ‘I can’t believe I’m giving you one of these – I’m delighted’, and I said, ‘Aw thank you’ and we had a giggle.”
Mel B Says Her Father Started Her Journey Supporting Domestic Violence Victims
Mel said that she drove to her father’s grave immediately she heard about receiving an MBE. He died from cancer after an eight-year battle in 2017.
The singer said her dad “started the journey I will be on for the rest of my life”, as she continues her brilliant work highlighting the dangers of remaining in an abusive marriage.
Mel B received the honor in the presence of her mother, who she had a falling out with over her marriage to Stephen Belafonte. Mel would go on to share that she was physically and emotionally abused by him during their relationship.
After their split in 2017, Andrea tweeted: “4 the 1st time in almost 10yrs I can go 2 bed knowing my daughter and the kids r safe no more abuse 4 any of us.”
