Prince Charles To Speak On the Severity Of Allergies At His 2-Day Global Symposium
Prince Charles will be hosting a 2-day global symposium in order to raise awareness on the important, and often ignored, issue of allergies. At the gathering, the Prince of Wales, 73, will meet with the parents of a teenager who died after having a severe allergic reaction to a Pret baguette.
The event, which will take place in Ayrshire, is being organized by the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation.
Prince Charles Is Moved By the Work Put In By Natasha Ednan-Laperouse’s Parents To Prevent Others From Suffering the Pain They Did
In 2016, Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, 15, had a severe reaction during a flight to France. The incident claimed her life, and since then, her parents have dedicated time, money and resources to making sure that their pain will not be witnessed by another.
Natasha’s parents Tanya and Nadim Ednan-Laperouse started the foundation following her tragic death which was caused by a violent reaction to sesame in a sandwich during a flight to France.
Speaking about the incident, Charles said that he was “moved beyond words” by the teenager’s death and how her parents have powered through the sorrow and “selflessly dedicated themselves to preventing other families suffering in the same way”.
What Caused Natasha Ednan-Laperouse’s Death And How Could It Have Been Prevented
On 17 July, 2016, Natasha passed away after eating a Pret a Manger artichoke, olive and tapenade baguette before boarding a flight at Heathrow with her father and best friend.
The coroner noted that she would not have eaten the baguette if the sesame seeds, to which she was severely addicted to, was listed in the snack’s package.
As a result of the incident, Natasha’s Law came into effect in October 2021. The law requires that all outlets must provide full ingredient lists with clear allergen labelling on Pre Packed for Direct Sale foods (PPDS).
The symposium will see Charles take part in a roundtable discussion with scientists and Natasha’s parents. Other guests will include world-leading allergy experts from the UK, US, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, and Denmark.
Mr Ednan-Laperouse, co-founder of Natasha’s Foundation, said: “We are deeply grateful to HRH The Prince of Wales for inspiring and hosting this momentous event, which will involve many of the world’s leading allergy experts.
“By bringing the scientists together in one room, we hope to identify the most important and effective ways of tackling the allergy epidemic, to prevent other families from enduring the loss and heartbreak that we have had to endure following Natasha’s death.”
