Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Exit Consequences “Overblown” by the Media
According to a royal expert, Meghan Markle and Harry’s exit from royal life wasn’t as big a blow to the institution as media outlets exaggerated it to be.
Megxit Damage to Monarchy “Greatly Overblown” Claims Royal Author
It’s been two years since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex officially stepped down from their roles as senior working royals and relocated to America. They are currently based in Montecito, California with their two young children.
Since their departure, the couple have been involved in a couple of projects, including podcast production, publishing a children’s book, appearing in various interviews and advocating for vaccine equity.
The couple’s departure from royal life was fraught with its own controversies, but Royal author Clive Irving, who recently released an updated version of his book “The Last Queen”, commended the royals for weathering “Megxit” “quite well”.
During a chat with express.co.uk, Mr. Irving was asked how Harry and Meghan’s exit has affected the royals, to which he replied: “I think it is greatly overblown. If you look at the effects of it on the institution itself, I think they’ve weathered it quite well.”
“I think it’s a question of the relationship of the two brothers and they seem to be reconciled now,” he said. “I think that Meghan raised a very important issue about the lack of diversity in the staffing of the palace.”
Staff Diversity in the Royal Household Needs Improvement, Says Royal Expert
However, Mr. Irving noted that the royals could put in more work to reflect the diversity of the outside world in their staff. “The palace must reflect the world outside not the world inside, and they still haven’t made that adjustment. But I think the two boys are going to get together again, they’re kind of natural companions.
“And that of course brings up the issue of Diana and Diana’s legacy. It’s astonishing how long-lived that legacy of Diana is.
“Diana is a reminder of a person who was very modern, open-minded and gave a completely relevant shine to the whole monarchy and that’s got to be rediscovered somewhere.
“I don’t think it’s going to be rediscovered by Charles and Camilla but it could be rediscovered by William and Kate.”
A couple months after the Sussex pair stepped away from royal life, they sat down with Oprah to hurl a series of “unproven” accusations against members of the royal family.
