Why Princess Margaret Was the Most Glamorous Member of the British Royal Family
Sure, Princess Diana is often referred to as the ‘People’s Princess’ and the most glamorous royal of the last century. Her daughter-in-law Kate Middleton has also managed to make headlines all across the globe for her show-stopping and fashion-forward style. But there’s one member of the British royal family that might have more diamonds, fashion and glamor than Diana and Kate combined, and that’s Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.
Princess Margaret was the younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth II’s only sibling. And she was also a fashion icon of her time with her unforgettable style. Her wardrobe even earned it’s own nickname in the 1950’s as ‘The Margaret Look.” In fact, she and her sister Queen Elizabeth were very different when it came to their public appearances. Margaret loved to experiment with different trends and often wore a variety of accessories from glamorous sunglasses to brightly colored headscarves.
The beautiful brunette royal dazzled in some of the most elegant and stylish couture dresses that were way before her time. Margaret took her royal look to a whole new level when she arrived to the Scottish Brunswick Boys Club Ball in 1948 wearing a glamorous and embellished satin dress and fur coat.
If that weren’t enough, she even managed to outdo Elizabeth Taylor in the jewel department when the two ladies met for the very first time in 1967. What’s more, satin and fur also became part of her signature look throughout her 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. Princess Margaret even managed to keep up with eighties fashion trends by wearing big shoulder pads, ruffled dressed and polka dots to events like the Royal Ascot and The Grosvenor House Antiques Fair in 1986.
