Queen Elizabeth Gets a New Commemorative Mint in Time for Her Platinum JubileeIn recognition of Queen Elizabeth the II’s historic achievement and for her service to Britain, the nation is preparing to celebrate her 70 years on the throne in the most iconic way possible.

Said to be the event of the century, it’s sure to feature a lot of glitz and glam, and let’s not even go into the 20 million flowers planted in time for the celebrations. The “Superbloom”, or so the flowers are called, will outlive the celebrations, becoming the Queen’s enduring legacy.

Another enduring legacy set to mark the milestone Jubilee is a brand new royal mint. The 50p coin will be launched next year.

A One-Of-A-Kind Coin for a One-Of-A-Kind Celebration

The coin will be the first of its kind, as it is the absolute first time that a royal event will feature on the tail’s side of a coin. The design has been approved by Her Majesty.

The number 70 will appear on the tail’s side of the coin as a tribute to the number of years the Queen has been on the throne when 2022 comes around. Her cypher will also be featured inside the zero as the central focus of the design, along with the numbers 1952 – 2022.

Clare Maclennan, division director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, said: “The Royal Mint has a proud history of striking coins for British monarchs and 2022 sees one of the greatest celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen with the upcoming Platinum Jubilee.

“Marking 70 days until the anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne, the Royal Mint is delighted to reveal the commemorative Platinum Jubilee 50p design ahead of its launch in the New Year.

“In recognition of the landmark occasion, this is the first time a royal milestone has been commemorated on a 50p coin and is a fitting celebration for Britain’s longest reigning monarch.”

The latest design will join a line of commemorative crown pieces from the Royal Mint over the years, which have celebrated the Queen’s Silver, Gold and Diamond Jubilees.

How to Collect the Platinum Jubilee Coin

The coin will be launched next year alongside a commemorative £5 crown, as a part of the largest collections made by the Royal Mint.

To get the coin, collectors can register their interest to the Royal Mint to claim the commemorative 50p piece.

The Platinum Jubilee will take place over a four-day bank holiday weekend in June 2022. Events organized by the Royal Family will take place across Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5.

The celebrations will start with the Queen’s birthday parade (a.k.a. Trooping the Color), Service of Thanksgiving, a Platinum Party at the Palace staged by the BBC, and the Big Jubilee Launch.
