Queen Jets Off to Balmoral Castle For a Rest Before the Busy Platinum Jubilee Weekend Kicks In
Her Majesty has taken a “mini-break” to Scotland to recharge and ensure that she’s ready to face the commotion of the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend. The 96-year-old is staying at her Highlands bolthole Craigowan Lodge on her Balmoral estate.
According to Insiders, the Queen “Thoroughly Enjoys” Breaks
The news of the Queen’s break is coming after The Sun revealed that a wheelchair lift and security ring of steel was installed around the lodge – allowing her to spend her time in Scotland comfortably.
The break is especially needed after the Queen delighted fans by attending several in-person engagements, including opening the Elizabeth line, enjoying the Royal Windsor Horse Show and going around the Chelsea Flower Show in a Golf Cart.
The Queen will reportedly be laying low at the lodge, described as “her favorite home”, before Thursday’s opening events.
This means that she wouldn’t be around to welcome Harry and Meghan as they arrive with their children this coming week.
The monarch has been known to visit Balmoral at around this time of year and usually stays there for up to a week.
A palace insider also noted that the 96-year-old monarch wants to have a laid-back final years and take more breaks to Balmoral and Sandringham, whenever possible.
The source said: “It dawned on her last year that she can take these mini-breaks and she thoroughly enjoys them.”
Queen’s Scottish Home Upgraded Ahead of Her Stay
Since Prince Philip’s death last year, Her Majesty has spent several weeks at Sandringham Castle. However, this is the first time she’s traveled north of the border since the Sun revealed her plans to spend more time at Craigowan Lodge.
Ahead of the Queen’s visit, the cottage was upgraded with a £20,000 lift. More upgrades to be installed at Craigowan Lodge include a new security gate, a state-of-the-art intercom system and a string of CCTV cameras.
The Lifton Trio lift, which is the largest in its range, is remarkably “wheelchair friendly”, even though insiders are still saying that she is persistently against the idea of using a wheelchair.
