Royal Family News: To Go or Not to Go to COP27
Royal Family news reveals, according to Independent UK, the annual climate crisis summit is set to be held in Egypt this year. Talks will reportedly begin on November 6. Royal watchers may recall that, while Liz Truss was still the prime minister, Buckingham Palace announced that the King would be skipping the conference.
According to BBC, there have been no new announcements on the matter since Rishi Sunak, also expected to be absent from the event, took the reigns as Prime Minister. Charles, who has long been an environmental advocate, was reportedly advised by the government to avoid the event, though sources have apparently denied those claims.
Marking the End of UK’s Hosting of COP26
For his part, PM Sunak was widely criticized for his decision to miss the gathering in Egypt, despite the role the UK plays in its transference of leadership as well as the urgent need to handle what has rapidly become a climate emergency. It’s now being reported that Sunak is, in fact, considering attendance after all.
BBC reports that this coming COP27 is intended to mark the end of the UK’s hosting of COP26. As the Prince of Wales, King Charles III was a leading figure at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow last year. The royal gave an impassioned speech about the urgency of the challenge, referencing the need for the global response to be put on a “war-like footing.”
