Royal Family News: Prince Philip Instructed Prince Harry To Do This When He Was Shipped Off to Afghanistan
British royal family news shows that Prince Harry the Duke of Sussex is talking about his family again. No news there, nothing to see here, move along. Except that this time what he has to say is newsworthy because he isn’t slamming, dragging or trashing his family for once. What a unique occurrence.
Harry’s mild words air in the tv special, Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers, a show to air on BBC1 on Wednesday.
Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh died in April at the age of 99. He was to turn 100 in June and the BBC prepared a special tribute episode to mark the occasion. After his death the tribute evolved into a memoriam, with his family sharing their fondest memories of the patriarch.
Royal Family News: Prince Philip Was a Good Listener
In the special Harry speaks of his time serving in Afghanistan as a part of the UK’s military operations. He says that his grandfather was a good listener: “Going off to Afghanistan he was very matter of fact and just said, ‘Make sure you come back alive’… then when I came back, there wasn’t a deep level of discussion, more a case of, ‘Well you made it. How was it?’ That’s how he was.”
He went on to say, “He was very much a listener, he sort of set the scene for you to be able to share as much as you wanted to share but he would never probe.”
Royal Family News: Prince Philip Would Have Been 100 This Year
In the tv special other family members contribute their own fond memories of the duke. Along the way watchers will discover that the 99-year old prince loved watching the Hairy Bikers cooking shows, he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren unconditionally, and he loved barbecuing.
To this end his grandson William the Duke of Cambridge says, “I can safely say there’s never been a case of food poisoning in the family that’s attributed to the Duke of Edinburgh.”
The documentary was originally meant to commemorate Philip’s 100th birthday. After his death the network changed the show to serve as a tribute to the prince with 14 Royal Family members sharing their musings.
Royal Family News: Prince Philip Was Married to Queen Elizabeth for 73 Years
There are some never-before-seen clips in the special including video of Philip enjoying himself at Balmoral and racing around the garden with his children. In one delightful clip he can be seen riding a little tricycle while the Queen runs behind.
Sophie the Countess of Wessex shared that, “Cooking is something that I love talking to him about. And he loves watching cookery programs. Hairy Bikers I think is one of his favorites.”
