Royal Family News: Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh Speaks Out After Death Of Woman Hit By Royal Police Escort
Two weeks ago, on Wednesday, May 10, a woman in her 80s named Helen Holland was hit by a police motorcycle escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie.
Helen who was in a critical condition after receiving treatment from paramedics at the scene was quickly rushed to the hospital.
The following day, May 11, the Duchess released a statement sharing that her prayers were with Helen and she hoped for a quick recovery.
Sophie’s statement reads, “The Duchess’s heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family. She is grateful for the swift response by the emergency services and will keep abreast of developments.”
The statement continued, “Further comment at this time would not be appropriate while the incident is being investigated.”
However, it turned out that Helen couldn’t make it as she passed away yesterday, May 24 – two weeks after the accident.
Royal Family News — Sophie Shares Her Condolences With Helen’s Family
After the news of Helen’s demise which was confirmed by her family, Sophie released a statement sharing her heartfelt condolences to Helen’s family at their tragic loss.
The statement released by the wife of Prince Edward reads, “The Duchess of Edinburgh is deeply saddened to hear that Helen Holland has passed away,” said Buckingham Palace via the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Also noting that “Her Royal Highness’s deepest condolences and sympathies go to all of Ms. Holland’s family.”
That same day, Helen’s son Martin Holland told BBC that his mother died after “suffering multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries.” He also said that his mother did her best to fight “for her life for nearly two weeks” unfortunately, “irreversible damage to her brain finally ended the battle today.”
According to ” Associated Press,” the Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the crash. Richard Smith, the Chief Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police’s Royalty told BBC that, “Tragic outcome is being felt by colleagues across the Met,” and their “thoughts are very much with the woman’s family and loved ones.”
Smith went on to add, “Officers know that their actions, both on and off duty, are open to scrutiny and following our referral of the incident, the IOPC launched an independent investigation. We continue to co-operate with and support that inquiry.”
