Royal Family News: When Did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Really start Planning Their Royal Exit
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have begun planning to step down as working royals at least six months following their wedding.
It started, at least for the public at large, in 2019, around the time of the Sussex’s visit to South Africa when the cracks between the Royal Family and the Sussexes began to appear, according to Marie Claire. Royal Family News – Sussexes Were Planning Departure in November 2018
Four months after their September 2019 trip to South Africa, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex famously or, as some might say, infamously stepped away from their public roles as working royals. Their lives and relationships with other members of the royal family have not been the same since that fateful day.
However, according to royal expert and biographer, Andrew Morton, who spoke recently on the UK Mirror podcast, Pod Save the Queen, the duke and duchess were planning their departure much sooner than we thought – in November 2018.

“Harry was having conversations in a London hotel with Oprah Winfrey back in November 2018, just six months after they’d been married,” said Morton, adding, “So, they were thinking about a different direction of travel pretty early on.”
Morton called the situation “ironic” according to Marie, in that Prince William and Kate Middleton were being set up to rule the kingdom, while Harry and his wife were being positioned to become global royals or world ambassadors. At the time, according to the UK Mirror, the Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William were thunderstruck by the news as they have not been in the proverbial loop.

Speaking of the irony, Morton explained that the Sussexes “had been given the keys to the first-class lounge when Prince Harry was given the position of Youth Ambassador to the Commonwealth. This was effectively the Queen’s way of saying ‘you do the rest of the world, leave William and Catherine to do the U.K., where they will eventually be the Heads of State.’”
The Diana, Princess of Wales biographer said that Harry viewed his relationship with Meghan Markle as a way out of the Royal Family and that the two had been thinking of living in New Zealand, having spoken to the prime minister there about it.
