What Does Prince Harry and Meghan’s Silence On Commonwealth Day Mean
The last royal engagement carried out by the Sussexes before their move to America was at the Commonwealth Day in 2020. This came a few weeks after it first became public that they were preparing to leave their posts as senior members of the Royal Family.
Once set to be the stars of the Commonwealth, they’ve been given a backseat after the Queen stripped them of their roles in 2021.
However, a Prince Harry source did hint that he’s interested in having a role in the Commonwealth.
King Charles’ First Commonwealth Day Service To Focus On Sustainability and Peace
It’s not a surprise that the Sussexes were not in attendance at this year’s grand Commonwealth Day service, nor was it a surprise that they did not release a statement to mark the day. After all, relations between the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family are said to be extra frosty at this time, especially following Charles’ decision to boot out Harry and Meghan from Frogmore Cottage.
Nevertheless, the day proceeded wonderfully, with King Charles leading his first service as monarch. Commonwealth Day is an occasion that sees all senior working members of the Royal Family gather for a service at Westminster Abbey and this year’s theme is about “Forging a Sustainable and Peaceful Common Future.”
Prince Harry and Meghan’s Previous Role in the Commonwealth
As former president and vice-president of The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, they previously pledged to work with the 54 nations. But they were stripped of their titles by the late Queen Elizabeth in February 2021, with Harry and Meghan going on to pronounce the Commonwealth as “Empire 2.0”.
They’re currently outsiders to the monarchy’s affairs, as tensions between them and the rest of the RF deepen following “Spare” and the Netflix docuseries “Harry and Meghan”, both of which are targeted at the Royal Family.
“The first time that we saw the other members of the family was in Westminster Abbey,” explained Harry in the docuseries.
“We were nervous seeing the family because all the TV cameras and everybody watching at home and everybody watching in the audience. It’s like living through a soap opera where everybody else views you as entertainment.”
He added: “I felt really distant from the rest of my family, which was interesting because so much of how they operate is about what it looks like, rather than what it feels like. And it looked cold. But it also felt cold.”
