Royal Family News: What’s This Business with Royal Titles?
Royal Family news and updates reveal that, according to GBN, Prince Harry was gifted the Duke of Sussex title from Queen Elizabeth II when he married Meghan Markle in 2018. However, apparently, according to a royal commentator, the King now wants to stop his grandson Archie Harrison from inheriting the title from his father.
We reported earlier this month that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son could now be called Prince Archie. The young prince’s title was updated on the Royal Family’s official website as Prince Archie of Sussex (via Town & Country Magazine). Likewise, his young sister, Lilibet also received a similar title bump. The outlet reported that previously, the royal brother and sister were listed as Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor.
King Charles Sets New Precedent
This came after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially referred to their young daughter Princess Lilibet in a statement confirming her christening. According to royal expert Richard Eden, however, King Charles will try and use a precedent he set last week to ensure Archie does not receive the Duke of Sussex title from his father.
Last week, the monarch dubbed his brother Prince Edward ‘The Duke of Edinburgh’ but emphasized that the title would return
to the King in the event of Edward’s death rather than falling to his son. Speaking about this decision on the Palace Confidential talk show, Eden said, “I have heard it said that part of the reason is that the King wants to stop Archie from inheriting that title of the Duke of Sussex.
So, this might be part of that, so he has now set that precedent. The problem is that he’d have to do it with all the royal dukes so he really wouldn’t want to do that to the very well-respected Dukes of Gloucester and Kent.”
Introducing Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a statement earlier this month addressing the new titles of their two children. It read: “The children’s titles have been a birthright since their grandfather became Monarch. This matter has been settled for some time in alignment with Buckingham Palace.”
Reportedly though, the two young children will only be using the titles in official settings and not in everyday life. With Prince harry being fifth in the line of succession, Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana will be sixth and seventh in line to the throne respectively.
